Family Recipes?

So I have been really enjoying cooking lately. I always liked cooking for my friends/roommates while at school and trying new recipes is a lot of fun for me. I think I'm the only one I know that really wanted to have a dinner party or to make a big meal for the group for Thanksgiving. I also enjoyed cooking while at my parents house this summer, especially with their groceries! It was something that my mom and I kept playing with. Biggest hit was probably the Baked Alaska that we pulled out at dinner parties.

I can't pinpoint when I decided that I liked to cook exactly. But I really enjoy good food, Love the food network (tho I can't afford it at the moment), and love the challenge of making great food for my friends and family.

As a graduation present I was given a recipe book from my family full of handwritten recipes from everyone. It's amazing and I love it! Everyone in my family has at least one recipe that they are known for. It's their "thing", they are always asked to bring it to family gathering and everyone raves over it. My mom's spaghetti sauce, Aunt Deb's Mascottis, Grandma's Lasagna etc. So, I don't know if there is an etiquette about family recipes? Am I allowed to change and possible improve upon them? Is it not just allowed but mandatory that I don't make them the exact same way? Is it okay if its all in the family? Or am I simply overthinking it and no one will really care...

Tonight I found Pizza Dough at my grocery store so I made a panzerotti for dinner and mascottis for appetizers if anyone comes to visit, but I tried to make them my own.

I think it's ok to change them sometimes, but if the person who considers it their personal recipe is there, eating the food, I would stick to the recipe. You don't want to offend them by saying 'I made it better by adding this' etc. If you are changing it a lot, like adding chicken instead of beef, then I think that's ok too, because you are making a variation and not just making it 'better'.
